Meet Generative AI

So far AI has sorted things. Generative AI does something new — it creates. It writes stories, draws pictures and makes music.

01

Learning Goals

5 min

By the end of this lesson you can:

  • Explain that generative AI creates new content.
  • Name two examples of generative AI.
  • Tell a generator apart from a classifier (which sorts).
02

Warm-Up · Human or AI?

8 min

Last lesson you trained your classmates. Now meet AI that makes things.

Read this short verse. Do you think a person or an AI wrote it?

"Steam curls up from teh tarik gold, / a morning warm against the cold."

Reveal

It could be either — and that's the point. Generative AI can write verses, draw art and compose music that feel human-made.

03

New Concept · Machines That Create

18 min

Sorters vs creators

  • A classifier sorts — "is this a cat or a dog?"
  • A generative AI creates — "write me a poem about a cat", "draw a dog on the moon".

How does it create?

It learned patterns from a huge amount of examples — millions of sentences, pictures or songs. Then it makes new combinations that follow those patterns.

Think of a chef who has tasted thousands of dishes. They don't copy one recipe — they invent a new dish that fits everything they've learned.

Where you meet it

  • Chatbots — write answers, stories, ideas.
  • Image generators — make pictures from a description.
  • Music & voice tools — compose tunes or read text aloud.
Watch out

Generative AI remixes patterns — it can make things up or get facts wrong. Treat its creations as a first draft to check, not the final truth.

04

Worked Example · A Brand-New Poem

18 min

Here is a generative AI asked to write a short poem. Notice it creates something new — it isn't copied from one place.

You

Write a cheerful 4-line poem about nasi lemak for a 10-year-old.

🤖 AI

Wrapped in banana, warm and neat, Coconut rice — my favourite treat. Spicy sambal, a crunchy crowd, Nasi lemak makes me proud!

The AI didn't look up this exact poem. It learned how poems and words fit together, then built a fresh one that matches the request.

The takeaway

Classifiers answer "which one?". Generative AI answers "make me a new one". Both find patterns — but generators use them to create.

05

Try It Yourself

20 min

Use your worksheet (we'll use real tools from the next lessons).

01 🟢 Sort or create?

Label each "sorts" or "creates": a spam filter; a tool that draws a dragon from a sentence; a face unlock; a story-writing chatbot.

Hint

Ask: does it pick from options, or make something brand new?

02 🟡 What would you make?

List three things you'd love a generative AI to make for a school project, and what content each would create (text, image, or sound).

Hint

For example: an image of a Malaysian rainforest, a jingle, a short story opener.

06

Mini-Challenge · Helpful or Risky?

12 min

Generative AI can do great good and cause real harm. For one type — text, images, or voice — write one helpful use and one risky use.

It works if the helpful use clearly benefits someone, and the risky use shows a real problem (like tricking people).

Show an example

Type: voice. Helpful: reading a book aloud for someone who can't see well. Risky: copying a real person's voice to fool their family — a "deepfake" we'll study later.

07

Recap

5 min

Generative AI creates new content — text, images, sound — by learning patterns from huge amounts of examples. It differs from a classifier, which only sorts. It's powerful and fun, but it can make mistakes, so we always check.

Vocabulary Card

generative AI
AI that creates new content, like text, pictures or music.
classifier
AI that sorts an example into a category — it picks, it doesn't create.
generate
To make something new from learned patterns.
08

Homework · Spot AI-Made Content

≤ 20 min

Find one example of content people say was made by AI — a picture, a song, a story, a video. Write what it created (text / image / sound) and one thing that makes it impressive or surprising.

Stay safe

Just look and note — don't sign in to anything. If something seems unsuitable, close it and tell your teacher.
